The end of the year is upon is, which can mean only one thing. Before you break out the champagne and the eyeglasses shaped like the number 2019, you’ll need to finish up all your CLE requirements. If you practice in any of these states, you have until 11:59 pm on December 31 to get everything done!
- Alabama: 12 credits every year, including
- At least 1 in Ethics
- At least 6 Live
- Alaska: 3 mandatory Ethics per year, but Alaska recommends taking 9 General credits.
- Colorado: 45 credits every three years, including at least 7 in Ethics
- Connecticut: 12 credits every year, including at least 2 in Ethics
- Delaware: 24 credits every 2 years, including
- At least 4 in Ethics
- At least 12 Live
- Georgia: 12 credits every year, including
- At least 1 in Ethics
- At least 1 in Professionalism
- If you try cases in Georgia, then you are required to take 3 credits of Trial Skills as part of the 12-credit requirement.
- Hawaii: 3 mandatory per year, but Hawaii recommends taking 9 total credits
- Every third year, at least 1 of the 3 credit hours must be Ethics
- Idaho: 30 credits every three years, including at least 3 in Ethics
- Indiana: 36 credits every three years, including at least 3 in Ethics
- Iowa: 15 credits each year, including at least 3 in Ethics every 2 years
- Louisiana: 12.5 credits each year, including
- At least 1 in Ethics
- At least 1 in Professionalism
- Nebraska: 10 credits every year, including at least 2 in Ethics
- Nevada: 13 credits every year, including
- At least 2 in Ethics
- At least 1 Substance Abuse
- New Jersey: 24 credits every 2 years, including at least 4 in Ethics. Attorneys with birthdays July 1 – December 31 are due to complete their requirements in 2018.
- New Mexico: 12 credits every year in the following breakdown:
- 10 in General
- 2 in Ethics
- At least 8 Live
- North Carolina: 12 credits every year, including
- At least 2 in Ethics
- At least 1 in Substance Abuse every 3 years
- Ohio: 24 credits every two years, including at least 2.5 in Professional Conduct (Ethics, Professionalism, Alcoholism, Substance Abuse, Mental Health, or Access to Justice).
- Oklahoma: 12 credits every year, including at least 1 in Ethics
- Oregon: 45 credits every three years, including
- At least 5 in Ethics
- At least 1 in Child and Elder Abuse Reporting
- At least 3 in Access to Justice every other reporting period
- Pennsylvania: 12 credits every year, including at least 2 in Ethics
- Tennessee: 15 credits every year, including
- At least 3 in Ethics
- At least 7 credits must be completed in a Live format
- At least 5 of the Live must be in a Traditional Classroom
- Washington: 45 credits every 3 years, including
- At least 15 in Law & Legal Procedure
- At least 6 in Ethics
- The remaining 24 credits can be earned in the above categories, as well as in:
- Professional Development
- Personal Development and Mental Health
- Office Management
- Improving the Legal System
- Wisconsin: 30 credits every 2 years, including at least 3 in Ethics (which must be done in a Live format)
- Wyoming: 15 credits every year, including at least 2 in Ethics
Plus, if your state sets the compliance deadline based on your birthday or date of admission (hint: Texas, New York, and Florida), December may also be a deadline month for you.
If you’re becoming certified as a Legal Specialist in Texas this year, you also need to complete your TBLS CLE requirement by December 31, even if you haven’t yet gotten the results of your certification exam.
