Bekink on Victim Impact Statements

Friday, January 4, 2019

Victim impact statements generally consist of a description of the harm in terms of the physical, psychological, emotional and financial consequences that the crime has had, and will have in future, on the victim and the immediate family of the victim, such as the spouse, parents, siblings or children. A victim impact statement thus affords victims a “voice” in that they are afforded an opportunity to express in their own words and according to their own perceptions the impact the crime had on their own lives and those of their families.
