The deadline to apply for Loyola Law School – Los Angeles’s 14th annual Journalist Law School is at the end of this week. Normally, I wouldn’t do a plug for people who aren’t paying me to do a plug but… have you seen this “Trump Administration” thing happening?
Every single day Donald Trump — or one of his family members, or one of his people — does something or says something that’s illegal, or should be. The country is being run by an international crime syndicate that attacks the very rule of law. And when they’re not breaking the law, they’re breaking a norm that people mistakenly think is a law. Then people find out that it’s not a “real” law and ignore the offense like it doesn’t matter.
It’s never been more important for journalists to have at least a background understanding of “what is law,” and the Loyola program has been trying to help for years.
And it’s entirely likely that having an understanding of legal concepts will be important in the future as well. I’ll do another plug here for the Vermont Law School media fellowships program. Vermont has a strong environmental program, and it is inviting people with journalism experience to participate in a fellowship to learn more about environmental law… which would make every “climate change” and “green new deal” conversation better, I think.
If you are a young journalist, it’s worth looking at some of these programs. The law is everywhere. Being able to talk about it competently would really help the national conversation.
